Philip Aitken
I am interested in the human condition, that we have the ability to understand ourselves and the capacity for good and evil. In my later work however I strive to create a distraction from that desire to understand, to offer a respite to that which is being experienced in life and allow the viewer to observe and interpret for themselves works which stand without obvious or intentional associations and connections.
Working predominantly with timber, (glass and steel have been other materials of particular interest in my sculpture work) I am bringing together the processes of building, constructing and assembling with the expressive qualities of the materials to create non-figurative works that combine the notions of compositional simplicity and visual complexity.
I am an academic staff member with the CPIT School of Art and Design and the School of Architectural Studies, Christchurch where I teach 3D/sculpture and furniture design. |
