Larinae Steward

Since immigrating to New Zealand from Southern Africa, I have had to deal with the pain of separation from my family, my childhood, familiar landscapes and those wonderful African experiences.  I am experiencing the way dislocation brings about fresh struggles when trying to establish a new identity within a new culture.  I am absorbed by the idea of home, displacement, dislocation, identity, sense of place, memory and loss.  Geographical dislocation provides me with a new vision and self discovery.

Glass is a wonderfully seductive medium which enables me to express ideas.  It symbolises strength, fragility and transparency in relationships.  My work is a personal narrative which deals with the issues of living in two cultures.
