2010 NZSAG Conference
BURSTING BUBBLES
October 22-25th 2010
Alexandra Park, AUCKLAND
Plan now to attend this 30th anniversary conference. The theme “Bursting Bubbles” has been chosen as bubbles are an important and integral part of glass blowing, they are sometimes cursed in glass casting, are definitely a nuisance when fusing but may be desirable in other processes. We wish to encourage artists to think beyond their current thoughts and break out from constraints (bubbles) real or imagined that limit how they operate and what they create. It may be they will find they are able to cooperate with others working is very different areas, not only glass, or they may find that there are other ways of working that challenge recognized good practice and yet enable new works to be created.
The committee have invited an interesting lineup of international experts to talk on their specialties and span the entire range of glass art techniques. Currently overseas speakers are:
- Tobias Mohl, from Denmark, a noted blower who is in demand worldwide.
- Max Stewart, Now based in Edinburgh, but known to many New Zealand artists. Max will be talking on his research into pâte de verre and his experiences painting with glass.
- Mark Eliott a flame-worker from Australia and his accomplice – film maker Jack McGrath, will discuss using flame-worked glass and other techniques to produce animation. They will also present for the first time in New Zealand their short film titled Dr Mermaid and the Above-marine.
- Gerry King, also from Australia will come after presenting a workshop at Claudia Borrella Design in Wanganui. Gerry is a blower who also works with fused and slumped glass.
- Warren Carther, from Canada is known for his exciting architectural glass.
Along with the technical talks there is the members exhibition and the book launch on Saturday evening. At this stage there is a good value prize ($1000) for “the most creative use of colour” which should offer possibilities to all glass artists and also a $1000 prize for the best piece by a student. Other prizes are likely as well. Plan to exhibit. Commission will be 40%. We hope the exhibition will be on for a week.
One planned highlight for the exhibition is the display of glass works (circa 1980) along side current works by the same artists. We hope that current and previous members will attend and participate in all aspects of the conference and also make use of the opportunity to reminisces with other glassies and relive the exciting glass moments of the past 30 years.
Monday is demonstration day with a chance to watch demonstrations and talk with artists about blowing, pate de verre, fusing and slumping, coldworking, and tool making.
There will be trade displays during the conference. If you wish to display (and sell) anything that is of value to glass artists please get in touch (email : Glasspres@gmail.com).
